Parent/Child Sailing Classes Children between 4-6 years old Parents, this is your chance to learn to sail with your young child between 4-6 years. This Start Sailing evening class teaches the basics of sailing to both parents and kids. Optimist Classes Children between 7-15 years old The Optimist is an 8-ft one-person sailboat for students ranging in age from 7-15 and weighing up to about 120 pounds. The Beginning Opti Class is designed for first-time students who learn how to rig the boat and the fundamentals of sailing. They sail two kids per boat. Those students who feel they have anunderstanding of the fundamentals and have demonstrated a good comfort level on the water should take the Intermediate Opti Class, where they learn to become independent skippers while improving boat handling skills and confidence under a variety of wind conditions. Those students who have demonstrated an ability to handle the boat independently can take the Advanced Opti Class, where they further develop boat handling skills and are introduced to basic racing concepts including starts, upwind sailing, reaching, and downwinds. Students looking for more will focus on boat trim for speed, basic “rules of the road”, and more advanced racing techniques, including starts, race strategy, tactics, and more. 420 Sailing Classes Youth between 12-18 years old The 420 is a 14 ft two or three person boat that can be sailed with spinnaker and trapeze as skill improves. First-time students looking to learn the fundamentals of sailing in a fun environment should take Club 420. These students sail 3 per boat. As skills improve, they can take the Intermediate and Advanced 420 Classes. Adult Sailing Classes The LCSS offers two different types of evening sailing classes for adults: Club 420 classes for beginning sailors looking to learn the fundamentals of sailing, or C Scow classes for those who already know the fundamentals and are looking to improve their skills while learning how to handle a larger boat. High School Sailing High School Sailing takes place in the spring and fall after school. Students have the opportunity to race in local high school regattas and practice 3 days per week. |
